NAVIGATING DIVORCE
How to Prepare, What to Expect, and How to Move On
Divorce is a subject we don’t like to discuss. But to ignore the possibility of it can be folly – personally, professionally, and financially.
Dr. Mandy Ashley, a pediatric dentist with a thriving practice in Bowling Green, KY, is the inspiration for this webinar. She is one of the co-presenters and shares her personal experiences having gone through the process — and provides her perspective on why a course on this topic is vital for married doctors (particularly women) as well as for those contemplating marriage.
Attorneys Brandon Collier and Eric Broder, principal at the family law firm Broder Orland Murray & DeMattie LLC in Westport, CT, are co-presenters with Mandy. Brandon discusses successful financial planning before and after divorce, and Eric focuses on the divorce process, division of assets, alimony, child support, prenuptial agreements, and more.
TOPICS COVERED
This webinar is two hours long, including time devoted to questions and answers, and covers a broad range of topics, including:
- Why female doctors, especially those who employ their husbands in their practices, need to have a handle on their financial affairs
- The divorce process – legal filings, hiring a divorce attorney, divorce court vs. mediation
- Practical strategies to reduce your financial obligations to your ex-spouse
- Children and custody rights
- Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements
- Protecting assets that you brought into the marriage
- The basics of long-term successful financial planning
- The personal component – how to simultaneously manage a busy practice and a divorce, the potential risks of employing a non-doctor husband in the practice
- Alimony – how it’s determined, how changing circumstances affect it, and why the alimony formula should incentivize the doctor to generate high future earnings
- Division of assets – who gets what, how is the practice valued to avoid “double dipping” by the non-doctor spouse
- Sustaining good mental health throughout the process and managing the social implications of divorce on your practice
